It’s that time of year when you can finally cash in on that welcome break—albeit, not usually long enough—from school, work, or perhaps both.

Maybe you’re saving the big vacation for summer, but that doesn’t mean you’re passing up the opportunity for a road trip or quick flight somewhere, sans North Easters this time of year.

But even if opting for a “stay”-cation and sticking around town, you still want to be well equipped so that you’re not spending your time looking for a convenience store or pharmacy.

Here are DTY’s top 5 things to pack for your spring break getaway from college.

  1. Condoms: Despite what we know about safer sex, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, still present a major risk for those who are sexually active. According to the CDC, 2016 had the highest reported cases in the history of those three diseases with more than 2 million cases in the US alone.

 

  1. Aloe Vera: Whether it’s the unfamiliar environment or the change of schedule, everyone is familiar with vacation constipation. It sounds harmless, but it can result in discomfort throughout your trip and actually make you more susceptible to illness.

 

Aloe Vera (latex) can help relieve blockages you might have due to your travels, and drinking Aloe Vera is beneficial for overall immune health. And because aloe is also a great burn relieving agent, if you’re going to be out and the sun and risk getting burned, aloe is the perfect thing to keep nearby during our getaway.

Aloe vera latex, gel, and leaf extract can be purchased in easy-to-pop pill form, but whether you decide to drink it or take a pill, it should be consumed with caution as it can, in fact, cause diarrhea.

  1. Bed Bug spray: Bed bugs are a major problem across the country, and neither hotels nor Air B&Bs are exempt. You don’t want to bring these things back into your home, so spraying your hotel bed as soon as you arrive may.

 

  1. Sunscreen: Even if you’re just walking around DC, early spring can bring very unexpected weather swings. It’s always a good idea to keep a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 on hand. If you burn easily or know that you’re going to a hot, sunny place, plan accordingly and bring a high SPF with you.

 

  1. Tick repellant: If you’re coming to DC or just deciding to stick around town and maybe heading out to Great Falls or exploring other local outdoor adventures, don’t forget your tick repellant. Sure, you’ll experience all the beautiful wildlife that the mid-Atlantic has to offer, but it could come with a price.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness that can cause rash, fever, fatigue, and other long-term symptoms that will completely ruin much more than just your vacation. DC’s high deer population makes it a breeding ground for ticks, so be mindful.

First aid kit: Packing a good first aid kit for any trip is always a wise decision. Most off-the-shelf kits will have everything you need to patch up a bruise or cut, but better kits will include anti-inflammatory pills and/or creams, as well as antihistamines in case of allergic reactions.
